Tallest Trees on Earth

vedphotoinfo@gmail.com (vedphoto) — Fri, 08 Feb 2013 01:02:20 GMT

]]>Humboldt State Park, California
The California Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is the tallest living thing on Earth reaching record heights of 379 ft. Paleobotanists think their extreme height was an evolutionary adaptation to avoid foraging dinosaurs that decimated other plant populations and to remain king in the ongoing struggle for sunlight in the some of the world's largest forests. This collection contains gigapixel panoramas, stitched together from thousands of images, and other photographs from a three-day astrophotography trip to Humboldt State Park, 20 August 2012.

While the pelagic range covers an enormous span, breeding is restricted to only about seven principal areas, four of which are on coast of California.

Space Vikings

]]>NASA Ames Research Center leads the charge in small satellite innovation and development while evoking the Viking spirit of exploration and adventure. NASA Ames Center Director Dr. Simon P. Worden poses alongside the Vikings of Bjornstad for this photograph to personify that spirit and highlight NASA leadership in the modern space age. The next generation of small satellites, known as CubeSats, float above and herald a new era in space exploration and science. These CubeSats can be launched into Low Earth Orbit at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems, allowing more frequent, and more accessible scientific missions.

Terrafirmament Collection

vedphotoinfo@gmail.com (vedphoto) — Fri, 08 Feb 2013 01:04:25 GMT

]]>Terrafirmament offers a perspective of our solar system, life and perceptions of temporal and spacial scale. For this photography exhibition, I pioneered new imaging technologies to capture unprecedented high-resolution views of celestial events over the past year and the tallest organisms on Earth, Sequoia sempevirens (Coastal Redwoods) of Northern California. 2012 indelibly marked our generation as heavenly bodies forged their orbits in the sky, blocking out the Sun and staging a spectacular performance for our planet. An exceptional Supermoon event illuminated a summer night and served as a prelude to the Full Solar Annular Eclipse over North America less than a fortnight later. The grand finale of celestial crossings, the Venus Transit over the Sun, ended the performance as it transfixed the collective human gaze just as it had hundreds of years prior when astronomers used such transit events to determine, to their surprise, the enormity of our solar system.
